DAMP SUB-FLOOR TIMBERS ATTRACT BORERS AND TERMITES.

Specialized measuring equipment is needed to check your sub-floor condition or timber dampness. However you can directly check for damp soil in the sub-floor area- if damp:

click here Noval will carry out a FREE Test of your home or building, and if required, Permanently Dry The Sub-Floor area of your Home or building Making it unattractive to termites & Borers.

Anobium Borer
Anobium Borer exits from timber it inhabits through small circular holes from 1 mm to 3 mm dia. Sawdust is produced by the borer as colonies of them tunnels into the infested timber. These Borers attack sub-floorjoists and bearers, baltic pine and hardwood flooring. Furniture also may also become infested with these borers. Borer attack is caused by damp sub-floor areas together with poor sub-floor ventilation. Damage caused by borers weakens flooring and sub-floor timber-work, resulting finally in collapsingof floors..

More

Borer development- cont
Young beetle larvae hatch from eggs, burrow into wood, and begin feeding. The larvae eat the timber and construct tunnels as they feed on starch and other components from the attacked timber. Wood-damaging borer larvae often go unnoticed because they feed beneath the surface of the wood and their tunnels are not visible. Feeding tunnels vary in size and shape according to species, and can be distinguished from other types of insect damage (e.g., termites, carpenter ants). The time required for the larvae to complete their development varies from a few months to several years, depending on the species and the availability of food and moisture in the wood.

Borers spend most of their time in the larvae stage, causing great damage due to their voracious appetite. They are attracted to timber with high moisture content. Note it is not possible to tell by touch or by the eye whether timber has a high moisture content- only specialized moisture meters can detect this.

When the lavae pupates, it developes into a beetle which emerges from the timber via a small "drill" hole 1 to 3 mm dia. Adult beetles search for more timber which is attractive, and has a sufficiently high moisture content.

Borer Exit Holes can be seen in the damaged timber joist (floor support)
